Based out of Vineyard Haven harbor on Martha’s Vineyard Island, the Vineyard Cup takes place every July. The 2015 races will take place July 10 – 12. This year a foiling kiteboard event has been added with world class kiteboarders arriving on the Vineyard to compete on one of the finest kiteboarding venues in the United States, the Vineyard’s own Cow Bay, where the breeze, its angle and the texture of the water will provide for incredible racing. Race courses will be set close to the beach to allow the beach crowd to be part of the excitement. It’s not uncommon on a great weather day for there to be upwards of 10,000 sun lovers on the beach. It should be spectacular!
The 24th Annual Seafood Buffet and Auction will be held at Tisbury Wharf on the evening of July 9th. It’s a fabulous time, a great fundraiser for Sail Martha’s Vineyard and a wonderful kick off for the big boat regatta which begins the following day, Friday, July 10th. Sail Martha’s Vineyard is expecting over 100 boats of all descriptions, designs and ages from schooners to catboats to modern design racers. The race courses have been designed to both test the skills of the skippers and crews and to provide great shore-side viewing of boats on the racecourse from a variety of Island perspectives from the East and West Chop Lighthouses to Eastville Beach to State Beach between Edgartown and Oak Bluffs to the beach at the entrance of Lake Tashmoo.
Charter boats like the venerable Black Dog tall ship Alabama out of Vineyard Haven harbor will be available to take those interested in going out to watch the racing. Some may even be racing! Keep an eye on www.vineyardcup.com for updates on charter opportunities. Also, www.yachtscoring.com will maintain a bulletin board of crew needed and crew available. Just link into the Vineyard Cup on their site www.yachtscoring.com to get on the board.
Each day after racing there will be parties for skippers, crews, family and friends with food, drink and entertainment in the Race Village at Tisbury Wharf on Beach Road right next to the Shipyard. We’re bringing in dinghy floats and have made arrangements with the launches to drop sailors coming in from their boats right at the main dock at Tisbury Wharf. There will be great music on Friday and Saturday and you may even get a chance to go home with a new (to you) boat at the end of a weekend for real short money. Thanks to our sponsors for making the music, food and drink happen. Speaking of the sponsors…all yes all (that would be 100%!) of the proceeds received from yacht and kiteboard registration and guest bracelets go to support the many programs that Sail Martha’s Vineyard offers to year round and seasonal residents as well as vacationers. Party goers will be treated to all of the fun and craziness that any group of sailors will provide when gathered in a group. The many event sponsors will be on hand displaying their wares and participating in the daily (not-so-serious) awards. Regatta merchandise will be on sale.
If you can’t make it, you can follow all of the action almost live on Facebook and Twitter and see what you’re missing.
